Message from Preparatory Headmaster: Nick Clogg
As we approach the conclusion of the 2023 academic year, I am thrilled to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the dynamic activities and remarkable achievements that have characterised the final term at St David's Prep School.
This term has been a hub of activity, featuring engaging tours, vibrant cultural events, and rigorous academic commitments across all grades. The Grade 7s have been diligently assessed through continuous skills-based activities and content reviews. They have been immersed in examinations, strategically designed to evaluate both content knowledge and skill application in anticipation of Grade 8. A similar assessment approach has been experienced by the Grade 4-6 group, the aim of which is to cater to the diverse academic needs of each boy. These results will assist us in understanding each boy’s strengths and challenges, and allow us to address these as we begin 2024. In addition, our boys have actively participated in various external assessments, including MATCH assessments for Grade 7 in Maths and English, and ACER benchmark assessments for Grade 3 and 6. These assessments furnish us with invaluable insights into our academic strengths and challenges, guiding our ongoing efforts for improvement.
A standout event this term was the Grade 5 Egypt Showcase Day, where we celebrated the synthesis of learning, research, and inquiry that took place throughout the term.
Our exceptional staff continues to actively engage in subject cluster meetings, courses, and professional development opportunities. This collaborative effort ensures that our teaching methodologies remain not only relevant but also exciting. We deeply appreciate the commitment of our staff to enhancing their skills for the benefit of our boys.
The annual art exhibition emerged as a resounding success, showcasing the artistic prowess of each boy. Nurturing artistic expression and providing a platform for our boys to share their creative achievements remains a cornerstone of our commitment.
The Grade 3 boys enjoyed a series of special events, including a retreat in preparation for their First Holy Communion, a day camp fostering teamwork, and a quiz afternoon in collaboration with St Teresa's Grade 3 girls. These events contribute significantly to their holistic development.
Sadly, we bid a fond farewell to Mrs Moorhouse and Mrs Jack, stalwart members of our staff for the past 17 and 11 years, respectively. Both have touched hundreds of lives and leave behind significant footprints. Equally, they will be remembered by so many boys for allowing them to reach their own potentials within an environment of absolute care and love. We also say a sad farewell to Ms Carien Groenewald who has been an outstanding member of staff for the past 4 years. Her absolute zest for life and unwavering kindness plus her unquestionable professionalism will be sorely missed by all. Lastly, we say goodbye to Mrs Jenny Dugmore who has been a contracted member of the wonderful Mini-Marist staff for the past 4 years. She too has made a significant impact in the lives of our Mini-Marists and the staff. Her professionalism, care for all, wisdom and love will remain as fond memories.
The upcoming year brings exciting additions to our staff, including Mrs Kirsty Wells (Grade 5 class teacher), Mrs Stephanie Black (Visual Arts teacher), Ms Michelle Strydom (Grade 3 class teacher), Ms Legohang Motsir (Grade 00 class teacher), Mr Matthew Orr (Senior Prep teacher), Mrs Simone Botes (Junior Prep Afrikaans teacher), and Mrs Angulique Hartzer (Aftercare Manager).
Our community actively participated in various initiatives, including a successful cake and candy sale that raised funds for charities. Ongoing support for the Princess Alice orphanage, the SPCA, Alexandra creche and Old-Age home, and collaborative efforts with other schools highlight our commitment to meeting the needs of the less privileged. These relationship-building opportunities are absolute highlights for both the boys and the staff.
The term has been culturally vibrant, featuring successful music soirees and arts festivals. Sporting achievements encompass basketball, cricket and water polo tours, chess tournaments, and notable triumphs in the Prestige athletics meeting which we won for the first time in 17 years. Our boys have consistently demonstrated commitment, resilience, and sportsmanship, bringing immense pride to our community.
As we approach the year's end, we eagerly anticipate the Grade 0 Nativity Play, the Carol Service and the Grade 7 Valedictory Mass. These events provide a reflective space for celebration and appreciation of both our boys’ and community's collective achievements, and the opportunity to wish our Grade 7 class of 2023 every success as they begin their College journeys.
As we reflect on 2023, we take immense pride in the successes achieved in academics, arts, sports, and community engagement. The happiness of our boys and the well-being of our staff remain paramount. We extend heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and the entire St David's community.
In conclusion, I wish each one of you a blessed Christmas, safe travels, and a wonderful New Year. Thank you for being an integral part of the St David's family.
