1st Team Football crowned the winners of the Nedbank Grey College Soccer Tournament

The St David’s Marist Inanda XI Football team participated in the Nedbank Grey College Soccer Tournament over the weekend of 3 – 5 October in Bloemfontein. 

The Inanda gents went up against 23 other teams in 35-minute per half matches, resulting in many of our boys playing over 200 minutes of soccer in 35-degree heat on the first day alone! The team showed great grit throughout the tournament and out of a total of eight games played, the St David's side won seven and drew one. 

We are ecstatic to share that the team walked away as champions of the tournament, beating Norkem Park in the final 1 – 0, with Ashley Madonsela scoring the winning goal with an assist from Matthew Moreira. On top of this magnificent result, St David’s students Anthony Lombaard and Matthew Moreira won defender and midfielder of the tournament respectively. Furthermore, Kai Haskell and Aiden Kleynhans have  both been selected for the final 27 of the South African u17 training squad, exemplifying the Marist tenet of Sportsman well beyond the gates of Inanda.

Beyond their dedication on the field, the team also had the opportunity to spend time together as a squad off the field. This included some fun in the sun at the hotel pool, a team meal at the authentically Bloemfontein 'Bush Pub', and a very spirited celebration of their win on the bus ride back to Johannesburg. 

We are extremely proud of these young gentleman and their dedication to the beautiful game, as well as for these wonderful results. Well done gents!
