Shrove Tuesday
On Tuesday, 1 March, St David's Marist Inanda commemorated Shrove Tuesday with the 8th annual Inter-House Pancake Race.
Shrove Tuesday is observed by Christians globally, as the day before Ash Wednesday and the Holy season of Lent.
As an all-boys Catholic school that welcomes people of all faiths and encourages the exploration of every individual's spiritual journey, the annual Pancake Race has become a well-loved tradition that embraces our religious ethos as well as encompassing our individual diversity.
Shrove Tuesday has for many years been referred colloquially to as 'Pancake Day', as pancakes have become a means of ridding your household of rich foods (such as eggs, milk, and sugar) before embarking on the 40 day season of Lent, which emphasizes eating simpler foods and/or fasting.
This year's Pancake Race was fierce in both the Prep and College, and there were some near accidental pancake plummets as the boys raced around the St David's Quad and over obstacles on the Prep fields. After much running, Osmond House won the coveted Pancake Race trophy pan. Students didn't only run with their pancakes but they ate them too! Each House had a stand where they sold pancakes with the most delicious toppings imaginable, and before long everyone had bought stacks of pancakes and were happily enjoying their sweet treats. All proceeds from the pancake sales went to the Marist Mercy Care Fund, and the Marist community raised over R22 000 for this organisation that delivers food, healthcare, and education to the Sundays River Valley.
