Conversations Assembly: Engaging Discourse
What a day at St David's Marist Inanda! The College had the privilege of hosting two distinguished guests: Dr Naledi Pandor, South Africa's Minister of International Affairs, and Dr Max Price, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town. The event provided a unique opportunity for the students to delve into discussions on economic development, social and current affairs- fostering a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives.
The day commenced with a warm welcome as the AmaGwijo boys greeted our honoured guests with melodic songs. Mr Thiel, the executive headmaster, led the way to the Champagnat Hall, setting the stage for an enlightening Conversation Assembly.
Mr Manthata introduced the esteemed interlocutors, which included Simphiwe Zindane, a Grade 11 student from St David's Marist Inanda, and a representative from Brescia House. Dr Max Price led the conversation, addressing the controversy surrounding the renaming of William Nicol Drive to Winnie Madikizela Mandela Drive, challenging the boys to explore diverse viewpoints before forming conclusions.
Dr Naledi Pandor shared invaluable insights into current global economic matters and their implications for South Africa. She encouraged the students to form their own perspectives by grounding themselves in the realities of South African life, recognising mistakes, and actively engaging in dialogue to find solutions to the world's challenges.
During the discussions, students expressed concerns about the country's current status, often feeling uncertain about their future. They also voiced apprehensions about the education system, noting that it doesn't adequately prepare them to tackle real-world issues, as it tends to focus on Western ideals.
Both esteemed guests emphasised the significance of continued education and exposure to diverse experiences. They underscored that South Africa boasts high-quality educational institutions, offering excellent training opportunities in universities, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges, and more.
In conclusion, the day's conversations were insightful and thought-provoking, encouraging St David's Marist Inanda students to think critically about the world around them. The visit from Dr Naledi Pandor and Dr Max Price served as a reminder of the importance of staying engaged in current affairs, seeking diverse perspectives, and pursuing education as a means to empower themselves and shape a better future. These discussions ignited a spark of curiosity and a commitment to addressing the challenges that South Africa and the world face, ensuring that our boys remain committed to the legacy of intellectual curiosity and social responsibility.
