Inaugural Old Boys vs 1st Team Water Polo Match
On the evening of Friday 27 January two teams assembled at the school’s Jubilee Water Polo pool. The St David’s 1st team, coached by Dean Whyte, were to take on all too familiar opposition - the Old Boys. It was match up of experience versus physical conditioning and didn’t disappoint at the least.
Our parents, past and current arranged a pool side braai as the stands slowly filled up to witness this all important clash.
The game began as any early season fixture would with ill-timed passes and wayward shots, but things settled down quickly as the school boys took the upper hand. This was a lead that would not be relinquished, as tired legs quickly saw faster rotations from the bench. The 1st team found a way to counter each time the old boys drew closer, mostly due to superior fitness and team cohesion which meant the lead was maintained. It took moments of brilliance that gave hope of a come-back for the old boys, but this was quickly squashed by the young guns. The final score of 14-10 was a fitting reflection of the game. Sincere thanks to the old boys for turning up and to both teams for the spirit in which the game was played.
