To educate children well, we must love them, and love them all equally.

St Marcellin Champagnat

An essential part of the mission and vision of St David's Marist Inanda is our dedication to excellence in all we do, our commitment to the highly valued profession of teaching and the professional development of all our staff, and our dedication to those entrusted in our care.

In line with this, we welcomed Luke Lamprecht and Robyn Vorster on Monday, 6 May, to present a workshop on Child Safeguarding. This workshop was highly valuable, and we as a school acknowledge the importance of continuing to ensure that our school is a safe environment for all, where the students of St David's are supported, cared for, and allowed to thrive in all they do.

The following are ways in which St David's Marist Inanda strives to continue to foster a safe and supportive atmosphere:

    1. Building Trust: The staff of St David's strive to cultivate trusting relationships with our students. We believe that when learners feel safe to express themselves, they're more likely to engage in the activities of the school, as well as thrive academically and emotionally.
    2. Listening Actively: We endeavour to take the time to truly listen to all our students. When they share their triumphs or troubles, we acknowledge their feelings and allow them to have a safe space to express these emotions. Active listening validates their experiences and helps build a sense of belonging.
    3. Promoting Inclusivity: St David's Marist Inanda embraces and celebrates diversity in all its forms in every aspect of school life, and ensure that each child is respected and valued as the individual they are. We have found that students who feel valued and respected for who they are, are more likely to respect others and commit to building an inclusive and diverse society.
    4. Addressing Bullying: We commit to act swiftly and decisively against any form of bullying or harassment.
    5. Providing Support: We actively endeavor to recognize signs of distress or struggle among the students and offer the appropriate support needed.
    6. Modelling Respect: As a staff, we lead by example, demonstrating respect, kindness and professionalism to everyone in the Marist community. We understand the duty we have as a staff in setting the tone of culture in the school, and that our actions reflect on the school as a whole. We uphold our values, mission, and ethos, and make this visible to others in all we do.
    7. Establishing Clear Expectations: Expectations for behaviour and conduct are clear and communicated. We commit to consistently enforce these expectations. When students know exactly what is expected of them, they feel more secure and stable in their environment.
    8. Collaborating: As a school, we value each individual and recognise the important skills, abilities, and perspectives that each member of staff contributes to the success of our institution. We believe that collaboration is vital, and we strive to use our individual strengths in combination to promote a school environment that is safe and supportive. We endeavour to continue to work with fellow educators, support staff, parents, and other stakeholders to maintain a united community that is committed to promoting the well-being of the school and our students. We believe that collaboration strengthens us and improves our ability to handle challenges and respond to an ever-changing society.
