Robotics and Young Engineers

Robotics in the form of Lego EV3s are used to introduce the boys to coding in Grade 6.

Computer Science in Grade 6 gets off to an exciting start, with the boys practising their engineering skills by piecing together their EV3 robots; this requires carefully following written instructions. Thereafter, the boys have the challenge of coding the EV3 precisely so that it can complete numerous tasks.

The focus in Grade 6 Computer Science then moves to an introduction to coding. Not only is coding vital because of the increasingly important role that computers and artificial intelligence are playing in our world, it is vital because of the 21st-century skills that it develops in students: problem solving, critical, logical and creative thinking, and perseverance. The excellent Code.org programme is used to introduce the boys to the HTML, CSS and JavaScript languages.
