As we embark on another exciting chapter in the journey of our Marist family, it is essential to reflect on the pillars that uphold our values and shape the character of our young men. At the heart of this ethos lies our unique house system, led by dedicated House Directors and tutors who tirelessly nurture the growth and development of each individual within our College.

We are thrilled to share the progress made on our recent joint projects with the school. The newly renovated Staffroom stands as a symbol of appreciation for our incredible staff. At the same time, the upgraded Clinic and modern Meeting Rooms reflect our commitment to providing top-notch facilities for students and faculty.

Ash Wednesday is the Church's Day of Atonement. The very name of the day comes from the ancient practice of mourning or doing penance wearing "sackcloth and ashes" to express penitence, not only by Christians but by pagans as well. The Old Testament shows us the pagan people of Nineveh, the pagan King Ben Haddad of Syria, and the Jewish Queen Esther, who fasted, wearing sackcloth and ashes. In the early Church, Christians who had committed serious sins did public penance wearing sackcloth and ashes. The Church instructs us to observe Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as complete fasting and abstinence days. Fasting is prescribed to reinforce our penitential prayer during the Lenten season.

We thank our St David’s community who gave so generously to the Foundation’s annual Christmas Giving campaign at the end of last year (a combined total of R38 500 was raised towards the main Fr Bernard Brewer SJ Bursary Fund and to the Old Boys’ Bursary Fund) and to the launch of the St David’s Memorial Pipe Organ Appeal (R335 000 donated to date - towards a total amount required of R600 000 – we are over halfway there!)

The commencement of a school year is filled with anticipation, promising fresh and untapped possibilities. For our boys, it's a chance to learn, grow, and explore new horizons. Change is an inevitable part of life, and within the school environment, it manifests through new teachers, classmates, and experiences.

Our athletes have showcased remarkable dedication and prowess throughout 2023, and the upcoming sporting events in 2024 promise to be nothing short of spectacular, as our young sportsmen are already fully involved and sparing no effort across sporting codes.

Term 1 brings renewed opportunities in academics, culture, and sports. We are excited to be back on the sports field and in the music and art spaces. Thanks to Mr Makola and his team of coaches and teachers (JP & SP) for putting together a busy term of sporting and cultural activities.

Let's make 2024 a year of personal and professional growth. Embrace discomfort as it opens doors to new opportunities and enriching experiences. Slow down, savour the moments, and intentionally acknowledge those around you. Remember, your actions speak louder than words; we must model the behaviour and body language we want to see.
